hey fellas

Hey all!

This is a quick blog post regarding what the plan is right now for Gooter’s 0.16 update and when further showcases of the update will be. Like I said in a previous post of mine, Gooter will be getting a dedicated day (or days?) in the summer where a lot will be revealed and showcased. To help answer the question in the title, this event will NOT be in May (it’s not summer!)

Now, I do realize that is rather obvious, however I still need to fully answer this question by also saying that there will NOT be any Gooter news of any kind in May! That’s right, a whole month (or so) without ANYTHING relating to the game’s development at all! I’m giving you all the silent treatment! 😀

NOTE: Of course, when I’m referring to no news, I am only talking about the actual development of the game and its features and not ideas or plans I may have, which includes this post in particular. Also, it may seem obvious to a lot of you but just to be clear, just because I am not sharing any news doesn’t mean that I’m not actively working on the game. In fact, I plan on spending a lot of time this month working to complete my internal checklist and getting the update as close to completion as possible. I’ll make sure to implement some fun surprises inside for you all while I’m at it so that the wait may be worth it after all!

Alright, that’s all I wanted to say. Hope you all can handle a whole month and then some! Bye!

Hey all,

These late-night Gooter blog posts aren’t really that good for my health, but I have that thing where I always think of these ideas when I’m supposed to be sleeping and don’t wanna forget to go through with it the next day soooo

Anyways, I wanted to provide an update on what I’m thinking about right now for what the order of updates will be for Gooter even if it’s not set in stone. Here’s the timeline I’m thinking of right now:

0.16.0.0

The Crossing Fields Update | Adds alternate paths and subworlds to Crossing Fields (World 1) and overhauls the design of the main route of the world. Alongside that, new terrain features, monsters, animals, mechanics, and atmospheric elements will inhabit this world in order to make it feel more alive, challenging, or otherwise just interesting. Oh, and a complete main menu overhaul as well and an ‘aura’ system, among other smaller yet still groundbreaking changes.

0.16.0.X

Hotfix and small feature updates.

0.17.0.0

The First Bosses Update | Separate update dedicated to adding bosses to Crossing Fields as well as adding other missing features and bug fixes that may have slipped the cracks in 0.16.0. 0.18.0 will basically also begin development around this time.

0.17.0.X

Hotfix and small feature updates.

0.18.0.0

The Blue Islands Update | Reintroduces and completely overhauls World 2 in a similar, if not more ambitious, manner to 0.16.0’s World 1 update. Again, new monsters, animals, atmosphere stuff, and terrain stuff is going to be added in order to make the world not boring. There aren’t nearly as many planned alternative paths as World 1 will have other than a special side quest path I’m thinking about.

0.18.0.X

Hotfix and small feature updates.

0.19.0.0

The Sun Desert Update | The final major update planned for the beta before 1.0 begins development. Adds the greatly anticipated(???) World 3. It is planned to be much faster-paced and intense than the other two worlds which I think is quite fitting considering the higher temperature. Of course, new monsters, animals, mechanics (sandstorms and beach balls!!!), etc will be added. Alongside that, an important (maybe?) story character will be introduced in this world, and I can’t wait for you all to meet the goofball business-woman herself.

0.19.0.X

Hotfix and small feature updates.

1.0.0.0+

The full and finalized game and story. Contains 7 wacky worlds (not inlcuding sub worlds and worlds for the route to the alternate ending) and a whole slew of new stuff to find. Planned for release on Windows, macOS, and maybe HTML if I can??? After that, I’m going straight to doing something else lmao

Hey all!

If you've been following Gooter on social media platforms like Twitter lately, you know that Gooter 0.15.1 is an update that has been in the works for several months now and has a bit of anticipation surrounding it. I advertised that the update would overhaul the game's first world, Crossing Fields, alongside adding new mechanics, music, enemies, and sub-worlds to add a sense of exploration to the game.

In the beginning, it was supposed to be a mere Crossing Fields update, adding some details and adding 2 sub-worlds that served different purposes, alongside overhauling the main menu again and whatnot. Over time, however, the envisioned update became more and more ambitious for some reason. I added a third sub-world, added collectible orbs (which will eventually become something else almost entirely in the future), and I also now have plans to completely overhaul the game's second world as well.

The reason that the update was supposed to be 0.15.1 instead of a major numbered version was that it was supposed to only update everything surrounding Crossing Fields which already existed in the game. I was going to wait until I added World 3, with World 2 being updated alongside it, in the 0.16.0 update as I considered major numbered updates to be the ones that introduced entire new worlds that progressed the story forward instead of only enhancing and supplementing the already existing story in the already existing worlds. The reason that I am just now changing my mind on this is because the update I'm now working on is pretty much overhauling almost everything about Gooter as a game rather than updating a single portion like I originally envisioned. 0.15.1, which I am now calling 0.16.0 from now on, might actually completely change the way you see and play Gooter, and it will now be the largest update in the game's history.

Whilst the name change won't rock your world, I do have some other related news that might. Because I mentioned that the update was going to be bigger than originally intended, it will take quite a while before I can get the update out there in its highest possible quality. Even though I never formally set a release window, I would like to state here that the update may come out quite a bit later than expected and I will not set any sort of release date before the update is 100% ready to ship. Heck, I'd even say that with the development time needed, as well as everything else going on in my life, I'd even say that there's a chance that the update will not even release this year at all like I originally intended.

Now, let me talk for a bit about what the goals for this update even are for when it comes out:

  • I want players to generally have more things to find and do in a much more lively and detailed environment.
  • I want individual levels in the game to have a sense of uniqueness never before seen in Gooter.
  • For Crossing Fields, I want the player to be able to have more choice and flexibility and to increase the amount of replayability the game can generally have with multiple paths, unique routes, and maybe even side-quests and secrets.
  • I want to add more atmosphere and life to the game as well, especially with ambience and different kinds of wildlife inhabiting the floating islands.
  • I want this update to also be Gooter's good first impression for what could be most of the playerbase in the future if the game ever gets popular.
  • Finally, I want this update to set foundational examples for development of future updates (in terms of world depth, not necessarily on update size, lol) and the final game with what I implement and change in the 0.16.0.

In order to accomplish most or all of these goals, I need to "delay" the update to a later time than I would have originally imagined. However, all I want is to release a quality update that, while not guaranteed to meet everyone's exact expectations, is an enjoyable experience all-around for both new players and those who have played before. Don't fret though, as if you are worried about being starved of content surrounding the update before release, I plan on not only releasing development updates and trailers in the coming months, but also release a "snapshot" version or two on Game Jolt soon which will focus on letting players try the new Crossing Fields for the first time and give feedback, so be sure to follow me on Twitter (@Anthono220) for future notices and news on 0.16.0 (and funny non-related posts too, mayhaps).

Wish me luck!

Ho hey! Another tiny update has made it's way! Gooter 0.15.0.2 is now live with these changes:

- Fixed issue with controller mode button in main menu not switching from controller mode to keyboard mode

- Fixed one of the Star Plains levels having certain items hidden (mistake from 0.15.0.1)

- Raised the volume of a certain music track

If there are no other issues that need to be addressed, this will be the last 0.15.0.x release before 0.15.1 starts development next month.

Enjoy!

Happy Friday (for EST people at least, lol)! Gooter 0.15.0.1 is now live with these changes:

- Fixed bug where lullaby music would not stop playing, even after being killed by a dorbir

- Fixed tile placement mistakes in certain levels

- Reduced rogut kill requirement from 100 to 75 (last level in Crossing Fields)

- Added dialogue that at least somewhat helps to explain what the player has to do in the last level of Crossing Fields (Should have been in the game in the first place, sorry hercoolass)

- Made roguts spawn more often (both difficulties)

Enjoy!

Gooter 0.15.0 is available now, introducing a second world with two parts, the first proper boss battle, an options menu, and more! This also means you can now play the game on the web for the first time! Enjoy!

*Alternatively titled “When is Gooter coming to Newgrounds and itch.io?”*

Okay, so I know that a few of you (I may know who you are) have been waiting for this update for literal months and I just want to say that I am sorry for making you all wait for so long to even play the second world of my game. I know that you all understand that a lot of work had to be done and has to be done in order for the update to be as polished and fun as possible. I just want to say thank you for being patient.

Unfortunately, you may have to wait a little longer.

The update, believe it or not, still requires quite a bit of work before I can even consider it releasable. I still need to polish up what I have added so far and add the remaining assets, as well as making final tweaks and play-testing. I also need to write a new universal game description for all platforms, as well as finishing up the new game thumbnail. Oh yeah, and might wanna also work on the changelog as well. As you can see, there aren’t a lot of things on the list, but there is still much work to do.

Now here comes a big question: “When would all of this be done by?” I don’t know the exact answer, but I do know some things that may play a factor into when the update might come out.

First, I want to let everyone know that Gooter is currently in a sort of development hiatus right now. Grade 10 finals are coming up (yes, I am actually a high schooler) and there is also a bunch of homework and some studying that I need to do. I may not return to development until after the last day of school.

Second, I don’t work on the game all the time. Believe it or not, I have to make sure that I am working on the game when I feel most comfortable and ready to do so. While there may be days where I work for multiple days in a row, there are also days in a row where I don’t work on the game. The reason why my mental health is pretty stable is because I take short long breaks, so this is pretty important.

Third, I have to go on vacation throughout last week of July, so there can’t be any development/preparation time during this period.

Lastly, obviously I have a lot of work to do, we went over this already.

So, when you add all of these up, what is the answer to this question about a release date? The answer might just be “Before the end of summer vacation (for me personally), starting with Mid-July.”

Now, you might be expecting some trailer for this update like I did with 0.13 and 0.14, however I might not actually do that. There is already a lot of things that I have to do in order to release this update, and having to make a trailer will just add one extra thing to that list. Instead, what I might do is release the update without the trailer and do a trailer later.

You might also be asking how I will release the update (That means when certain versions will be available and how I tell people about it releasing). I believe I may have an answer to that. As of right now, the plan is for Gooter 0.15.0 to be a timed Newgrounds exclusive when it first launches. No, this doesn’t mean that some Newgrounds character or reference is gonna show up in the game or something like that. There are multiple reasons for this.

One, I want to release each version one by one instead of at the same time like I would before. The game will be on three platforms when 0.15.0 releases fully: Game Jolt, itch.io, and Newgrounds. The plan is for the game to release on Newgrounds first, then itch, then finally Game Jolt. Of course, there may be other platforms of future interest, such as Crazy Games and Kongregate, however the former three will be the platforms where Gooter 0.15 is hosted.

And two, I generally want to start taking Newgrounds more seriously. I may talk about that in the future, but for right now that’s really all I have to say about that.

If you’re worried about the timed exclusivity of Gooter 0.15 on Newgrounds to last as long as a certain other video game’s anticipated update, don’t worry. The timed exclusivity is planned to be only around a few days/a couple of weeks if nothing goes wrong and I don’t forget about the update. ;)

The itch.io release will also be a special occasion because it will be the first time Gooter has appeared on the platform since I removed it a long time ago. The game’s page will have a cool redesign that fits nicely with the branding of the game, and it will be so cool. It will also be the first platform where you’ll be able to download Gooter 0.15.0, so there’s that as well.

oh yeah and game jolt version is also a thing that’s gonna happen or whatever lol

Alright, I think I covered everything I wanted to cover. I don’t really have an epic conclusion, so have this picture from my camera roll instead: iu_321968_8552920.png

i think ritz would approve of this picture

Anyways, I hope my post answered some questions about my plans regarding Gooter. Bye!

iu_263251_8552920.jpg

Hello!

I am known as Anthono220 on the internet, and I have been working on a game called "Gooter" for over 2 years now. It is a top-down-shooter game made with GameMaker Studio 2, with music made with LMMS and graphics made with a combination of paint.net, Krita, GraphicsGale, and the built in GMS2 graphics editor.

You should read the rest of this post if you want to learn more ;)

What even is Gooter about?

In this game, you play as a blue creature with a red nose named Gooter iu_263250_8552920.png. He has the ability to shoot bullets out of his mouth, which is needed in order to break the crates iu_263252_8552920.png that are blocking his way. The default type of crates are wooden, but there are also metal crates iu_263255_8552920.png, which take longer to destroy.

He also has to shoot down red fleshy creatures with green eyes named Roguts iu_263253_8552920.png, which come from every direction and are out to get him. They spawn randomly, so you'll never know what kinds of encounters you will have.

The game is split into multiple levels grouped in worlds which take place of floating islands. The main objective is to get to the teleporter iu_263256_8552920.png at the end of each level by any means necessary.

There are also other kinds of creatures, some of which you'll only find in certain levels. Soobers iu_263254_8552920.png, unlike roguts, do not spawn in random places, cannot fly, and will not hurt you unless you shoot them first. Corrupted roguts iu_263257_8552920.png are rare roguts that do not spawn randomly and cannot fly, like soobers, and are slower. They also take longer to defeat, like metal crates.

Each world has different kinds of obstacles that you have to go through in order to reach the teleporter. In World 1 (Crossing Fields), you only need to get the roguts and crates out of the way. In World 2 (Star Plains and Moon Forest), there are no roguts. However, now you'll have to destroy crystals and, in the second part of the world, avoid waking up Dorbirs iu_263258_8552920.png. Dorbirs are named after a combination of the French word "dormir" (to sleep) and the English "bird".

There is more to the in-game content, but I think you guys get the idea.

Art and Music

Like mentioned earlier, the game's art is made in a bunch of programs, while the music and sound effects are being made with LMMS (Linux MultiMedia Studio).

In regards to the music specifically, most tracks consist of a combination of high quality VSTs (Virtual Instruments) like LABS and Xpand!2, as well as soundfonts from things such as Touhou and the Sega Genesis (Mega Drive).

"Okay, all of this is cool and all, but I am not really convinced."

Well that's probably because you haven't seen the what the game looks like.

Here, have some screenshots:

iu_263260_8552920.jpg

iu_263261_8552920.jpg

iu_263262_8552920.jpg

"But he's just standing there... doing nothing."

Hey, you don't know how hard it would be to have Gooter shoot while taking a screenshot. Fine, if you want action, then you gotta watch this trailer. It's kinda outdated and won't exactly be what you'll experience when you play it here on Newgrounds (more on that later in this post), but it should give you an idea.

"Nah, even with that trailer I am still not convinced."

If a video won't do it, then maybe you should play the demo RIGHT NOW!

"Wait... I CAN ALREADY PLAY IT RIGHT NOW?!"

Yes! You can download the currently available demo version for Windows right now via Game Jolt! It includes the entirety of World 1. Like the trailer, it is outdated compared to what it will be when it debuts on Newgrounds, but again it contains the basic idea.

Either "Ew, Game Jolt", "I had problems with the demo", or "Needs more."

If the demo that is available right now (Version 0.14.0 by the way) does not satisfy you, perhaps the upcoming version could make things at least a little better. 0.15.0 will include add a lot of stuff including:

  • World 2 (maybe with a new boss? maybe???)
  • Gamepad controls (required for online version)
  • An actual story lol (cutscenes before, after, and in-between)
  • Updated World 1's music
  • A lot more that I forgot about already

Of course, if you have constructive feedback to give, PLEASE give some. I definitely want to make the game better, and I want to do what I can to do so with your help. Hopefully, releasing the game to Newgrounds will give some much-needed (and healthy) criticism to the game.

When will the game come to Newgrounds?

Of course, it may not be that long of a wait before you can play the new version on Newgrounds (and other platforms, too), however I believe that quite a bit of work needs to be done in order to release a good demo to the world. I want players like you to enjoy Gooter, and I want 0.15.0 to deliver, even if it is an Early Access version.

Gooter 0.15.0 is planned to be release on Game Jolt, itch.io, and Newgrounds sometime in Spring. It will obviously be available as a downloadable version (only on Windows; Mac and Linux users may or may not be able to use Wine to play) and an online version compatible with modern web browsers.

How much will it cost when it fully releases and when will it fully release?

The plan is for the full game to come out in 2023 at the earliest, and is planned to be a "name your price" game! That means that you can pay whatever you want for it, even nothing! This is so that as many people as possible can play and have fun with the full game, no matter if they can pay for it or not. Yes, the full game will even be available online as well.

Believe it or not, I am making this game for free in my free time (I pay nobody and I get paid nothing), so when the game becomes name-your-price in a couple of years, I would very much appreciate some donations. For right now, I am not accepting donations, so don't worry!

That's all for me!

I think I have explained what the deal is with this project enough. I hope that you are looking forward to playing Gooter. If you have any questions or need some kind of explanation, please leave a comment. It is likely that I will answer as much of them as I can. It is also okay to leave feedback here on the Game Jolt demo currently available. I will post more news regarding the game on my profile soon, including when Gooter debuts on Newgrounds.

See you all soon!
