I can’t believe that I forgot about my Scratch account’s 10th anniversary, so I guess I’ll say happy belated birthday to anthono220 on scratch 🎉

Hey all, it’s been a little bit since my last post on this site, hasn’t it?

I was looking back on my past posts and I decided to make a new one letting you guys know what’s been happening, just because. Without further ado, let’s go over what I have to announce and talk about.

CAVEFACE

First off, I feel as though I should update you guys on what’s happened with my latest game, CAVEFACE, since the last post. Obviously, January 2023 happened and let’s just say that, shockingly to many, I managed to release something on time for once! 🎉 The game is now out of both Game Jolt and itch.io and its respective soundtrack (a whopping 2 songs!) is now available to listen on YouTube! I decided not to release this game on Newgrounds because, as it is right now at least, I don’t think it’s good enough to not get blammed lol. I think I’ll have to release an update first before I even attempt to submit the game to Newgrounds, though that probably won’t happen for another several years or so.

As I stated in the last post, the game was actually originally made for a class at school where we used what we’ve learned and whatnot and applied it to a capstone project. The class has since ended and I managed to prepare and present a slideshow for the game. It went well, and my teacher actually considered my presentation as one of the best in the class. I didn’t give the class any links to the game though, lol.

As for what the future of the game holds, probably nothing for a long while. While there are a couple of things that I want to add to the game such as progression, a proper ending, and more music, my priorities are in other games so it’ll be a long time before I touch this game again.

Future of Gooter

If you recall, I made a tweet announcing development on Gooter had basically stopped. It wasn’t an outright full-stop cancellation, per se, but the game as it was wasn’t going to happen anymore. I released an unfinished/cancelled build of 0.16.0 on itch.io and I don’t think I’ve talked much about what’s happening with the world of Gooter since. So, I have decided to spill these beans right now:

A new Gooter game is in development.

That’s right. While Gooter as every knows it has been cancelled, I am currently working on what could be referred to as a hard reboot of the project. Now, when I say hard reboot, what do I mean? Well, when Gooter first refreshed 3 years ago, the sprites, sounds and much of the gameplay carried over to the new version. The only notable differences at the time were a new smooth camera and using tile sets instead of objects for the levels (man, what was I thinking?). I took my work from the first version and expanded upon it in the new version, but not for this new Gooter game. It’s a “hard reboot” compared to a “refresh” because none of my past work is going to carry over to this new version.

I’m rebuilding Gooter from the ground up, with new sprites, new sounds, less story, an overhauled gameplay feel, and a general direction shift, among other stuff. Basically, a whole new game. In fact, while it’s still “Gooter” at it’s core, the game will be so different that it won’t even be called Gooter, but rather be given a somewhat different name altogether. I have already decided on the name, but I won’t announce it until I start showcasing the game sometime in the future, hopefully for Summer of Gooter in June or July. After, I’m probably going to post devlogs and sneak peaks for the game on Twitter like I used to for Gooter. Not often, but enough where I hope to share a lot of the development process.

That’s all I’ll say for this game right now, but I hope you guys are excited for what’s to come!

On updating old games

Yes, a lot of my games are unfinished and lacking in content. Yes, I want to do something about that. Yes, I’ve already started working on a big update for an old game. I want the update to release this year, but considering school, the Gooter game that I mentioned, and my usual laziness, I don’t know when I’ll even get back to work on that. I DID set up a Trello board for the game, so at least I hope that can help me with development and staying on track.

What and where’s that “second game” for this year that I’ve talked about?

If you’ve been paying attention, you may have seen mentions that I wanted to release two or even three games. I even mentioned it in my CAVEFACE presentation, actually. While there’s plenty of time left this year for me to make a quick little game for the other half of this year, that’s not as much of a guarantee anymore. Perhaps the game COULD be a demo for the Gooter game, but at the same time it would be preferable if the game was an original title like CAVEFACE. I actually had an idea of what I wanted the game to be, but I have since then lost interest in it and kinda forgot about it. Oh well, maybe I’ll pick it back up someday. For now, let’s just wait and see what the game will end up being, if there’s even another game for this year that is.

Storywriting

Since the last post, I’ve also thought about writing a story. I’ve even started a draft and I have some characters and arcs in mind. The biggest problem is deciding on a medium for the story, though, so chances are we won’t see the project come to fruition anytime soon. I don’t have anything to share about the story itself, I just wanted to share. If I have something for the story to show, however, expect it on Newgrounds. ;)

Music

I mentioned in the last post that I wanted 2023 to be a great year for music releases, akin to 2020 and 2021 where I posted a lot of music. It probably won’t happen, especially with me knowing I couldn’t even release one track a month in 2022 like I intended lol, but there’s definitely plans to still make quite a bit of music this year. I’m even planning on majoring in music in my community college, so hopefully that’ll help a little bit. Not much more beyond that, just some thoughts on my music that I wanted a section for on this post.

Life in general

I’ve officially lived to see Queen Elizabeth die and Ash Ketchum leave the Pokémon anime. I am only months away from graduating high school. I have managed to create lots of actually decent works. I have personally changed so much, even since freshman year. I’ve had my first girlfriend and me and my friends have generally matured so much. It’s all a little crazy to think about, and I just want to thank anybody whose stuck with me throughout everything, good and bad, as well as everybody who has even considered checking me and my work out. Life’s gonna get crazier from here yet I’ll always be here producing better content for all of you.

That’s all for today! Before you go, a new thing I’m starting with these posts is recommending stuff like music at the end. Kinda got inspired by a different blog to do this tbh.

For today’s post, I’ll end with the very first Thing of The Day! A mix I’ve been listening to a bit recently, inspired by a particular aesthetic. Enjoy, and I’ll see you guys next post!

Hey all!

Wow, what a year it has been huh? A war in Ukraine, endless drama and shenanigans, the death of the Queen, and worst of all… (ALMOST) NO ANTHONO220 GAME UPDATES OR RELEASES? wowie what an pretty bad year, but luckily 2023 (if putin and/or any of the other big creeps don’t drag us into death) will probably be a better year personally. Not only did I get a sweet girlfriend earlier this month that I can spend time with (don’t ask who, i will only name drop in the most random moment possible during conversation) but I am also graduating from high school next year! 🥳 Also also, I have plans to release more amounts of stuff than this year to make everybody else’s year better as well! :D

I have a game that I plan on releasing in early 2023 for a capstone project class. I will spill right now that the game is called CAVEFACE and is a top-down sandbox game set in, well, a cave. You can take care of a pet that looks like the player character but yellow. There’s still quite a bit of work I have to do before it’s considered done. There’s a chance are the game may receive an update or two, although I may prefer to work on something else (I’ll touch on that after this paragraph). Before the game releases on Game Jolt and itch.io in early 2023, be on the lookout for a trailer that I may drop sometime in January. 👀

Not only am I most certainly gonna release CAVEFACE in 2023 (regardless of the final product’s quality, lmao), but I am aiming to release a SECOND or even a THIRD game next year! That’s right, I want 2023 to possibly be the craziest game release year since 2020 (Gooter, Gooter LANd, Jamsta, Running Duck of the Summer, and PhysicsPlace all got some kind of release that year). One of the ideas I have in my head involve a character from a game I worked on but never finished a few years ago (possibly also in 2020). I already have a sort of prototype, however I might go in a little bit of a different direction with it and make it more of a bright and lighthearted game. That’ll launch on Game Jolt, itch, AND Newgrounds simultaneously later in 2023, so stay tuned for that as well.

Oh and I should go ahead and mention that these games are gonna all get new music that’ll drop on YouTube and maybe Newgrounds and Soundcloud if I feel like it, so I’d say that fans of my music are gonna be eating good next year. 🍽️ 😋

Now, of course, all of this is subject to change and I bet everybody knows by now that there’s a good chance that it’ll end up being different due to certain circumstances such as school, relationships, laziness, not being satisfied with what I’m making or what direction I’m taking, etc. For now, consider this my initial vision 2023 and something that I will likely at least try to accomplish. Until I have more news to share, see you all next year! ✌️

Hey all!

This is a quick blog post regarding what the plan is right now for Gooter’s 0.16 update and when further showcases of the update will be. Like I said in a previous post of mine, Gooter will be getting a dedicated day (or days?) in the summer where a lot will be revealed and showcased. To help answer the question in the title, this event will NOT be in May (it’s not summer!)

Now, I do realize that is rather obvious, however I still need to fully answer this question by also saying that there will NOT be any Gooter news of any kind in May! That’s right, a whole month (or so) without ANYTHING relating to the game’s development at all! I’m giving you all the silent treatment! 😀

NOTE: Of course, when I’m referring to no news, I am only talking about the actual development of the game and its features and not ideas or plans I may have, which includes this post in particular. Also, it may seem obvious to a lot of you but just to be clear, just because I am not sharing any news doesn’t mean that I’m not actively working on the game. In fact, I plan on spending a lot of time this month working to complete my internal checklist and getting the update as close to completion as possible. I’ll make sure to implement some fun surprises inside for you all while I’m at it so that the wait may be worth it after all!

Alright, that’s all I wanted to say. Hope you all can handle a whole month and then some! Bye!

Hey all,

These late-night Gooter blog posts aren’t really that good for my health, but I have that thing where I always think of these ideas when I’m supposed to be sleeping and don’t wanna forget to go through with it the next day soooo

Anyways, I wanted to provide an update on what I’m thinking about right now for what the order of updates will be for Gooter even if it’s not set in stone. Here’s the timeline I’m thinking of right now:

0.16.0.0

The Crossing Fields Update | Adds alternate paths and subworlds to Crossing Fields (World 1) and overhauls the design of the main route of the world. Alongside that, new terrain features, monsters, animals, mechanics, and atmospheric elements will inhabit this world in order to make it feel more alive, challenging, or otherwise just interesting. Oh, and a complete main menu overhaul as well and an ‘aura’ system, among other smaller yet still groundbreaking changes.

0.16.0.X

Hotfix and small feature updates.

0.17.0.0

The First Bosses Update | Separate update dedicated to adding bosses to Crossing Fields as well as adding other missing features and bug fixes that may have slipped the cracks in 0.16.0. 0.18.0 will basically also begin development around this time.

0.17.0.X

Hotfix and small feature updates.

0.18.0.0

The Blue Islands Update | Reintroduces and completely overhauls World 2 in a similar, if not more ambitious, manner to 0.16.0’s World 1 update. Again, new monsters, animals, atmosphere stuff, and terrain stuff is going to be added in order to make the world not boring. There aren’t nearly as many planned alternative paths as World 1 will have other than a special side quest path I’m thinking about.

0.18.0.X

Hotfix and small feature updates.

0.19.0.0

The Sun Desert Update | The final major update planned for the beta before 1.0 begins development. Adds the greatly anticipated(???) World 3. It is planned to be much faster-paced and intense than the other two worlds which I think is quite fitting considering the higher temperature. Of course, new monsters, animals, mechanics (sandstorms and beach balls!!!), etc will be added. Alongside that, an important (maybe?) story character will be introduced in this world, and I can’t wait for you all to meet the goofball business-woman herself.

0.19.0.X

Hotfix and small feature updates.

1.0.0.0+

The full and finalized game and story. Contains 7 wacky worlds (not inlcuding sub worlds and worlds for the route to the alternate ending) and a whole slew of new stuff to find. Planned for release on Windows, macOS, and maybe HTML if I can??? After that, I’m going straight to doing something else lmao

Hey all!

If you've been following Gooter on social media platforms like Twitter lately, you know that Gooter 0.15.1 is an update that has been in the works for several months now and has a bit of anticipation surrounding it. I advertised that the update would overhaul the game's first world, Crossing Fields, alongside adding new mechanics, music, enemies, and sub-worlds to add a sense of exploration to the game.

In the beginning, it was supposed to be a mere Crossing Fields update, adding some details and adding 2 sub-worlds that served different purposes, alongside overhauling the main menu again and whatnot. Over time, however, the envisioned update became more and more ambitious for some reason. I added a third sub-world, added collectible orbs (which will eventually become something else almost entirely in the future), and I also now have plans to completely overhaul the game's second world as well.

The reason that the update was supposed to be 0.15.1 instead of a major numbered version was that it was supposed to only update everything surrounding Crossing Fields which already existed in the game. I was going to wait until I added World 3, with World 2 being updated alongside it, in the 0.16.0 update as I considered major numbered updates to be the ones that introduced entire new worlds that progressed the story forward instead of only enhancing and supplementing the already existing story in the already existing worlds. The reason that I am just now changing my mind on this is because the update I'm now working on is pretty much overhauling almost everything about Gooter as a game rather than updating a single portion like I originally envisioned. 0.15.1, which I am now calling 0.16.0 from now on, might actually completely change the way you see and play Gooter, and it will now be the largest update in the game's history.

Whilst the name change won't rock your world, I do have some other related news that might. Because I mentioned that the update was going to be bigger than originally intended, it will take quite a while before I can get the update out there in its highest possible quality. Even though I never formally set a release window, I would like to state here that the update may come out quite a bit later than expected and I will not set any sort of release date before the update is 100% ready to ship. Heck, I'd even say that with the development time needed, as well as everything else going on in my life, I'd even say that there's a chance that the update will not even release this year at all like I originally intended.

Now, let me talk for a bit about what the goals for this update even are for when it comes out:

  • I want players to generally have more things to find and do in a much more lively and detailed environment.
  • I want individual levels in the game to have a sense of uniqueness never before seen in Gooter.
  • For Crossing Fields, I want the player to be able to have more choice and flexibility and to increase the amount of replayability the game can generally have with multiple paths, unique routes, and maybe even side-quests and secrets.
  • I want to add more atmosphere and life to the game as well, especially with ambience and different kinds of wildlife inhabiting the floating islands.
  • I want this update to also be Gooter's good first impression for what could be most of the playerbase in the future if the game ever gets popular.
  • Finally, I want this update to set foundational examples for development of future updates (in terms of world depth, not necessarily on update size, lol) and the final game with what I implement and change in the 0.16.0.

In order to accomplish most or all of these goals, I need to "delay" the update to a later time than I would have originally imagined. However, all I want is to release a quality update that, while not guaranteed to meet everyone's exact expectations, is an enjoyable experience all-around for both new players and those who have played before. Don't fret though, as if you are worried about being starved of content surrounding the update before release, I plan on not only releasing development updates and trailers in the coming months, but also release a "snapshot" version or two on Game Jolt soon which will focus on letting players try the new Crossing Fields for the first time and give feedback, so be sure to follow me on Twitter (@Anthono220) for future notices and news on 0.16.0 (and funny non-related posts too, mayhaps).

Wish me luck!

Ho hey! Another tiny update has made it's way! Gooter 0.15.0.2 is now live with these changes:

- Fixed issue with controller mode button in main menu not switching from controller mode to keyboard mode

- Fixed one of the Star Plains levels having certain items hidden (mistake from 0.15.0.1)

- Raised the volume of a certain music track

If there are no other issues that need to be addressed, this will be the last 0.15.0.x release before 0.15.1 starts development next month.

Enjoy!

Happy Friday (for EST people at least, lol)! Gooter 0.15.0.1 is now live with these changes:

- Fixed bug where lullaby music would not stop playing, even after being killed by a dorbir

- Fixed tile placement mistakes in certain levels

- Reduced rogut kill requirement from 100 to 75 (last level in Crossing Fields)

- Added dialogue that at least somewhat helps to explain what the player has to do in the last level of Crossing Fields (Should have been in the game in the first place, sorry hercoolass)

- Made roguts spawn more often (both difficulties)

Enjoy!
